Character Descriptions: Seussical Jr.
Horton the Elephant: is a big-hearted elephant who is
steadfast, responsible and always tries to do the right thing for his/her
friends. He is imaginative, a worrier, and very sincere. This is the biggest role with A LOT of singing and acting involved.
Jojo: is a “Thinker”, a smart kid with a wild imagination that always gets him/her in trouble. The whole story happens because of Jojoʼs imagination. This
should be a strong singer, and actor.
The Cat in the Hat: is full of mischief, fun, and
imagination. The Cat stirs things up, causes trouble, but always sets things
right again, helping Jojo to discover the power of his/her own imagination as they create
the story for the show together. The Cat is a comic, clownish, over-the-top
character, taking on many different personalities. The Cat does sing but it is
more of an acting role than a singing role that can be played by a boy or a
girl. Being able to improvise (come up with your own things to say) well is a
huge plus.
Gertrude McFuzz: is very self-conscious, awkward and thinks
that her one-feather tail isnʼt “perfect." She wants desperately for Horton to
notice her. She changes during the show from a nervous and shy bird into one
with the power an confidence to save the day and care for a baby elephant bird.
This should be a very strong singer and an actor who is not afraid to be quirky
and dramatic.
Mayzie La Bird: is self-centered, selfish, and vain (think
Sharpay “High School Musical”). Mayzie will never admit to her own flaws. She manipulates
anyone she can into doing what she wants. She isnʼt all bad though. In the end
she tries to do the right thing. This role is for a great performer who can
sing, act, and dance well.
Sour Kangaroo: has a lot of attitude! Sheʼs loud, bossy,
confident, and a lot of fun! She's a belt-singer with lots of star power!
Mr. Mayor & Mrs. Mayor: (of Whoville) are Jojoʼs parents
trying very hard to raise a difficult child. They may get aggravated with Jojo,
but they love her very much and try to do the right thing, even if it turns out
to be a mistake.
Young Kangaroo: has a lot of attitude just like her mom!
Sheʼs loud, bossy, confident, and a lot of fun!
The Wickershams: are monkeys from the jungle of Nool. They
are buddies that like to tease, play pranks, and get a kick out of making
mischief, although often at othersʼ expense.
The Bird Girls: are an all-girl singing group (like from the
ʼ60ʼs or 70ʼs). These are large vocal and dance roles.
Yertle The Turtle: The Judge presiding over the trial of
“The People vs. Horton.”
The Grinch: a Who with a solo line. Must have a lot of
character.
Vlad Vladikoff: is the “bad guy” with a mission to steal the clover.
Large Ensemble of Who Citizens & Jungle Citizens: These characters have
lots of singing and dancing to do as a group. Some may have featured solo
parts.
